APT is an international non-governmental organization focused on the prevention of torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. The APT conducts regular and unannounced visits to places of detention as one of the best ways to prevent torture and ill-treatment. The APT has been the driving force behind the drafting, adoption, and implementation of international and regional legal instruments to prevent torture including the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT).
